Aloe Vera may be used to treat a wide array of equine ailments. Investigations by veterinary professionals have established that Aloe Vera can be effective in assisting with a large range of skin problems, joint issues and internal disorders in equines. Most commonly recognized for its ability to soothe and heal irritated and inflamed internal membranes, Aloe Vera is now widely used and accepted as a natural approach to treating gastrointestinal disorders. Particularly useful for horses who are prone to Equine Gastric Ulcers and other digestive upsets. Many racehorse trainers also feed Aloe Vera to increase stamina and performance whilst reducing the effects that competitive stress places on the horse's body.

Aloe Vera and Horses with Stomach Ulcers

Aloe Vera taken internally may help the protective action of gastric mucus against the irritating action of pepsin. Aloe Vera soothes because it comprises of many polysaccharides which are chemically very similar to the natural protective mucous membrane of the stomach. Aloe Vera may assist in inhibiting excessive gastric secretion by the gastric mucosa. This property is attributed to the anti-histamine action of Aloe Vera. Empirical evidence suggests that Aloe Vera does not neutralize the acid, but goes back to the cause of overproduction of gastric acid. Aloe Vera may also overcome acidic levels in the stomach which are too low. Aloe Vera is bacteriostatic (stops bacteria from reproducing) and therefore helps to prevent the growth of bacteria responsible for the stomach ulcers. In view of the persistent nature and tendency of re-occurrence of this bacteria and ultimately reoccurring ulcers, administering Aloe Vera daily may support and assist this common problem in horses.

Aloe Vera and Skin Issues

Aloe Vera has the ability to penetrate through the epidermal layer of the skin to the deep dermal layer. The enzymes contained in the gel help break down dead tissue from the skin and therefore Aloe Vera serves as an excellent natural exfoliate. The salicylic acid content also assists in exfoliation. Together these actions help remove dead and damaged cells making Aloe Vera beneficial for skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Aloe Vera is also particularly useful for cleansing/healing skin wounds, cuts, bites and rashes due to its ability to increase cell division. It has been shown scientifically by Dr Atherton, Dr Cochrane and Dr Danof that Aloe Vera increases cell division by fibroblast in the skin by at least 3 times. This is why wounds tend to heal quicker. Clinical experiences by veterinary surgeon Dr David Urch found that wounds heal 1/3 quicker than those treated with conventional veterinary preparations.

Storage

Our Aloe Vera must be stored in a cool (under 30 degrees), dark spot away from direct sunlight. If possible, it is recommended to store in the fridge over the warmer months.
