Self Regeneration Pasture Mix
With Safeguard early flowering ARGT resistant ryegrass
Irwin Hunter & Co have introduced this pasture mix to cater for the large number of farmers whom require an early flowering pasture of ryegrass and clovers that will set seed for regeneration in the following years and give farmers protection against annual ryegrass toxicity at the same time.

Cultivate area to be sown to stimulate Wimmera germination then spray with non selective herbicide thereby reducing Wimmera seed reserves before sowing Safeguard. Leave a test strip.

Through late winter early spring graze to ensure Wimmera pasture is in vegegative phase so that head emergence is in sync with Safeguard. Mechanical manipulation can be used.

Remove livestock to ensure good seed set before grazing as dry standing feed after full maturity. Refer Safeguard management notes.

Self Regenerating mix:
Safeguard: The only early flowering commercial ryegrass with ARGT resistance that can inoculate Wimmera pastures for future protection against ARGT. Refer Safeguard brochure for additional information.

Border is a large leaved, white flowered, erect growing annual Balansa clover. Border is approximately 7 days earlier flowering than Paradana.

Hykon Rose clover: Annual legume with good spring production well suited to our Mediterranean-type climate growing satisfactorily on a wide range of soils.

Dalkeith sub clover: A very versatile and proven sub clover with good seed set ability that combines well with other species in this mix.

The mixture is based around Safeguard ARGT resistant annual ryegrass that will successfully cross pollinate with Wimmera providing ARGT resistance to the following year's progeny. Safeguard is the only annual ryegrass that Irwin Hunter & Co will recommend for pasture regeneration in Western Australia as it flowers early whist there is still good moisture levels in the soil, thereby increasing the chances of a successful seed set.

Self-regeneration mix recommended sowing rate:
A minimum of 12 kgs/ha or up to 15 kgs/ha where there is a likelihood of a higher Wimmera plant population. The higher seeding rate will increase the effectiveness of cross pollination with the local Wimmera ecotype, increase winter production and assist with second year regeneration.
